BL-8L High Capacity
UV82 Series Battery
including UV82X, 82C, 82L & UV89
John 'Miklor'
The BL-8L is a 3600 mAh battery designed specifically
for the Baofeng/Pofung UV82 series transceiver.
Battery Capacity 3600 mAh
The standard BL-8 battery is a 7.4V 1800mAh, though many have been mislabeled as 7.4V 2800/3000/3350 mAh from the factory.
I have 2 standard batteries. One labeled 1800mAh, the
other 2800mAh. They are both the exact size and weight.
The total weight of a standard BL-8 weighs 3.1oz (88mg).
Regardless of the markings, this is an 1800mAh battery.
The BL-8L high capacity battery is 5.3oz (150mg) and
2.25" longer.
The BL-8L is a true 3600 mAh battery.
The additional 2.25" to the length of the battery
takes the total length to 6.9". When standing vertically, the battery is stable, but a little top heavy.
I personally find that a small price to pay.
Designing the case as longer rather than thicker allows
it to utilize the standard CH-8 battery charger.
No alteration to the belt clip is necessary as the
thickness is the same.
The battery snaps on cleanly, and I didn't find the
additional 2.2oz objectionable.
Performance
I did a side-by-side comparison using two same model
UV82 radios with all software settings identical.
With both tuned to a constant signal (NOAA). Starting
with both batteries fully charged, the radio shutdown
time ratio was almost exactly 2 to 1.
When I run in radio in my vehicle, it fits nicely into
the cup holder and the extra weight actually helps keep
it in place when using a Spkr/Micr.
Conclusion
For all day events such as hiking, camping, Field Day,
Hamfests, etc. or any time you just don't want to take
the chance of depleting your battery, this would be an
excellent choice.
