Introduction

The Nagoya UT-72G is the newest addition to the Nagoya family of Mobile antennas.  The 72G was introduced for those wanting to use GMRS as their primary band. The sweeps below show that although this antenna was designed specifically for GMRS, it also performs well on commercial and ham frequencies as well. Also, it's power capability is rated at rating is 80W.

What's in the Package

- Heavy Duty magnetic Base with 13' (4.0m) RG58A/U  (PL-259)
- Main antenna element
- Coil Spring base
- 10" (26 cm)  RG-316  Cable to Handheld jumper (SO-239 to SMA-F)
- SMA Male to SMA Male adapter

Opening the package, you will find the hefty 3 3/8" x 3/8" (8.5 x 1.0 cm) rare earth magnet at the base with a rubberized pad on the bottom to prevent any scratching of the paint.  Driving down the highway with the UT-72G attached to the roof of your vehicle, this antenna is definitely not going to move.

The total antenna length is 20.5" (52 cm) long with an active element is 19" (48 cm) long and just over 1/16" (2 mm) thick.

A Nice Plus - 2 for 1

The cable is now 13' (4.0m)  run of RG-58A/U terminated with a PL-259 connector.  Unlike some antennas using RG-174, the heavier cable has lower loss and is resistant to pinching, crimping and weather impact.

Also included is a 10"  RG-316  jumper with SO-239 and SMA-F connectors.  While the main cable will mate with virtually all mobile transceivers, the 10" adapter jumper with the SMA-F allows the flexibility of easily connecting to a handheld.

Also included is am SMA Male to SMA Male adapter.

Test Results

The antenna is omni-directional and rated at 3.5 dBi gain.  For testing purposes, I placed the antenna in the center of the roof with over two foot of metal in all directions.  The SWR results were excellent with the target being the GMRS frequencies. The sweeps below show that the SWR on both Tx and Rx were close to 1.5:1 at the center of the GMRS band.

462MHz                         468MHz

The coil at the base if the antenna serves a dual purpose. Along with the flexibility of the antenna, it also adds to its resonant bandwidth. This allows an excellent match for both the 2m and 70cm ham bands as well.
Antenna sweeps show good for both Ham and GMRS bands.

144MHz                         444MHz

An SWR of less than 2.0:1 is obtainable between 138-168MHz and 420-468MHz. This would make it feasible for use as a commercial band antenna as well.

Summary

Over the air test results were excellent.  The antenna is commercial quality and will not disappoint.

Good job, Nagoya.  I definitely give it a 5 star rating.
